HISTORY OF CHOCOLATE I
The history of chocolate goes back almost 4000 years.
The word ‘chocolate’ itself, goes back to the Aztec and Mayan cultures.
The tree growing cocoa originates from the tropical plains of central and South America and has been cultivated for at least 3 millennia. The cocoa beans were first used as a currency : people were using them to do swap, to pay taxes and even to buy slaves. Regarding the Mayas, they cultivated this tree and were using the cocoa beans to produce a drink. Some documents dating from the Mayan culture, explain that chocolate was used not only for the ceremonies but also on a daily basis. Moreover, both the Aztec and Mayas associated chocolate with Xochiquetzal, their goddess of fertility. Besides, we may add that the cocoa beans were also used for healing purposes in Europe and South America.
