Charles Delacre, a pharmacist by training, set up his dispensary near the Palais Royal in Brussels. At the time, chocolate was mainly prescribed as a tonic or medicine. However, as chocolate was increasingly regarded as a sweet, Charles Delacre decided to open a chocolate shop near the Grand-Place in Brussels. The success of the shop was immediate.
Charles Delacre made a name for himself on many occasions with members of the Belgian royal family. In 1879, he was awarded the title of "Court Supplier". This prestigious title can be seen on Delacre's current packaging.
Soon, however, the workshops and facilities of the small factory in Ixelles could no longer keep pace with the ever-increasing sales. To remedy the situation, Charles decided to build a new chocolate factory in Vilvoorde in 1880.
Delacre began making biscuits in order to diversify its activities. The first biscuit was marketed in 1891 under the name 'Pacha Delacre'. The range was extended and special actions and advertising campaigns were organised to promote the Delacre icons.
Charles Delacre hands over management of the company to his son Pierre. The troubles of the war suddenly disrupted the company's activities. The occupation from 1914 to 1918 forced the biscuit factory to reduce its activity for the first time.
At the end of the war, Delacre decided to focus exclusively on the creation of very high quality refined biscuits. New biscuits were created using fine proportions and quality natural products. Extremely fine biscuits such as 'Cigarettes Russes', 'Suprêmes Sablés' and 'Biarritz' were created during this period.
The success of these refined biscuits was immediate, enabling Delacre to conquer the international market. Once the European market had been conquered (Delacre biscuits are distributed in most European countries), Delacre was also able to cross the oceans and establish a long-term presence in North America.
Delacre modernises its image while remaining true to its heritage, values and consumers. Delacre Biscuits wanted to give the brand a warmer, more modern image. The notions of pleasure and indulgence, as well as biscuit-making expertise, are at the heart of this new visual identity.
